How can technological transformation create a better tomorrow?
In recent years, digitalization has become ubiquitous in all areas of life and the economy. Thanks to information technology, machines, products and people are connected more and more. Is this leading to a smart green world in which everyone benefits from technological progress while the environment is preserved? Or are we heading into a digital growth economy in which money and power are concentrated among few and humanity passes beyond the planetary boundaries even more quickly?
Once again, we will be guests at the headquarter of Deutsche Telekom in Bonn. Together with international experts from science, technology, society and the arts we will examine the opportunities for making digitalization more human and sustainable in the future.

Yannick Hofmann – In search of the intelligent Museum
Yannick Hofmann, media artist and deputy director of the Hertz-Lab at ZKM, is looking for the intelligent museum. The 4-year project experiments with different approaches and forms of expression of digital art at the interface of technology, science and society. The aim is to offer a level of reflection for the general public in the form of interactive and experiential presentations through the artistic examination of AI topics, thereby opening up new ways of museum communication and mediation.
Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner – Sustainability in the digital age
Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner is a renowned expert in the fields of globalization, sustainability, decarbonization and digitization. Since January 2020 he is the President of the German Environment Agency (UBA). Recently he was director of the Institute for Environment and Human Security at the United Nations University (UNU-EHS) and Co-Chair of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) for the German government. For fifteen years he headed the German Development Institute (DIE), one of the world's leading research institutes on global development issues. Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner is of the opinion that mankind must shape digitization in order to ensure that environmental and climate protection receive worldwide attention.
Nick Nuttall – Digitalization: silver bullet or Trojan Horse for our climate crisis
Nick Nuttall is currently both International Strategic Communications Director of Earth Day Network and the climate social platform We Don't Have Time and has over 18 years of experience working with the United Nations (UN). Nick joined the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in January 2014 where he was the spokesperson for securing the climate agreement at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris. Nick was also Director of Communications and Spokesperson for the 2018 Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco, CA. Before his work at the UN, he was the award-winning Environment and Technology correspondent for The Times of London. In his talk Nick deals with the question how we can make digitalization work to overcome the damaging trends of global challenges like climate change to biodiversity loss
Angela Richter – Digital Resistance
Angela Richter, German-Croation theatre director and author, is intensively involved with the topic of "digital resistance". When she developed a play about WikiLeaks in 2011, she contacted Julian Assange. Between 2012 and 2018 she visited him about 30 times at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and interviewed him regularly. Based on these interviews she creates the theatre performance “Assassinate Assange”. Her cross-media production "Supernerds" is a distillation of her regular conversations with whistleblowers and surveillance experts such as Edward Snowden, Julian Assange and Daniel Ellsberg, the editor of the 'Pentagon Papers'. Her book “Supernerds Conversation with Heroes” has been published by Alexander Verlag Berlin. She is currently working on a book about Wikileaks that will be published by Westend Verlag. Based on Angela Richter's intensive preoccupation with whistleblowing, in her talk she approaches the concept of digital resistance and questions the individual's potential for action.
Daniel Sproll – Accessing reality through VR
A trained cognitive scientist, Daniel Sproll has been at the forefront of the latest virtual reality renaissance for the past 7 years. First as a researcher studying human navigational behavior in VR, then as a UX designer laying groundwork in early VR interaction design, and now as co-founder of realities.io, where he is exploring what we can create when we bring the real world into the virtual one using 3D scanning technologies. His work is driven by the belief that spatial computing will fundamentally change how we interact with digital content and the hope that, if we get it right, it holds the chance to make computing less abstract, more explorable, more embodied and ultimately more human.
Prof. Dr. med. Hendrik Streeck – A future without pandemics?
Prof. Dr. med. Hendrik Streeck has spent most of his work and research life in the US, including Harvard Medical School and John Hopkins University in Baltimore. Since October 2019 he is Director of the Institute of Virology at the University Hospital Bonn. The 42-year-old scientist is setting new accents with his specialization in HIV research. His goal is to be better prepared against pandemics worldwide. Due to climate change and globalisation, mankind will continue to be confronted with unknown viral diseases in the future. "There are more than 400 viruses transmitted by mosquitoes alone." He warns against exaggerated expectations for vaccine development and would like to see a pragmatic approach to the coronavirus.
Frank Thelen – 10xDNA - The mindset of the future
Frank Thelen is a European serial founder, technology investor and TV personality. In his role as the founder and CEO of Freigeist Capital, he focuses on early-phase investments. He was the first investor in startups like Lilium Aviation, Wunderlist, xentral, Smartlane, Ankerkraut and YFood. His products have reached more than 200 million customers in over 60 countries. In 2018, he published his autobiography at age 42, which became a bestseller. In May 2020, he released his second book 10xDNA, explaining the technologies of the future. In his talk, Frank Thelen shares with us his conviction why mankind is facing the greatest revolution in its history.
